A Night on Seneca Rocks

This should be considered a joint venture between a friend, Ludovic Moore and me. Ludovic gave me several wonderful photographs of Seneca Rocks at night and I took it from there. As this painting developed, my mind heard Moussorgsky ever louder. I think he visualized his A Night on Bald Mountain like this, so I made an effort to enhance this painting to visually portray the somber, strange and at times frightening music of his composition.

I created this from a combination of two reference photos taken in different seasons. The Fall Mountains are from another location, but this looked right. I felt that the colors of Fall and the promise of Winter and skiing made the painting more exciting.

Big Cove

Blackwater Falls

Cabin Mountain

If Canaan Valley is our playground, Cabin Mountain is our sand box. On it we hike, ride, climb, bike and ski. Like a lover it is the first thing we see when we open our eyes in the morning. It is the rampart guarding the southern rim of our valley. It has guarded our home for millions of years and, timeless like all mountains, will look down on us millions of years hence.

Canaan Dawn

Cranberry Glades

Dawn Patrol

Flag Tree at Bear Rocks

One of the unique sights in this area is the conifers that have grown one-sided. They grow in a 4000 foot plateau pushed to one side by a west wind that never ceases. The environment is harsh. These trees are hundreds of years old.

This is a nondescript stream near our home. Judy’s Barn

This is real barn and silo on a farm owned by “Judy” south of Elkins, WV. I’m proud of its present residence in the courtroom lobby of the Federal Building at Elkins. Unfortunately, my husband has a wy of pointing out that not many people heading into the courtroom and anticipating five to ten in the slammer will stop to admire my work. Oh, well.

Keepers of the Dawn

The early bird may catch the (yuk) worm, but the early artist catches the drama of a brand new day here on the east-facing escarpment known as Bear Rocks in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. I love the results I obtained using strong pigments on watercolor canvas to replicate these early morning colors.

Oxbow in the Blackwater

The Blackwater River meanders through our Canaan Valley for 15 miles until it crashes over an impressive falls. (Please look at my Blackwater Falls and First Light.) over the ten thousand years since the ice sheet left us, the river has altered its route many times leaving oxbows such as this.

Red Skies in the Morning

Seneca, A Distant View

If you are a professional climber, you have heard of Seneca Rocks. “The Rocks” are a major challenge of their own. They are used also, for training for still more difficult climbs – Everest, K-2, or McKinley. Seneca Rocks cannot be seen from distance because of other mountains, but this is what I think it would look like from a couple of miles away.

Spruce Lake

Although we have a Spruce Lake in Canaan Valley where I live, and Spruce Lake at Spruce Knob about fifteen miles away on West Virginia’s highest mountain, this isn’t either one, exactly. That Old Barn

This is the first of my barn “series. I didn’t start out with a barn plan; I just like barns. This is a metamorphosed real barn just west of Harman on Route 33. I painted it as an experiment in color use. There are only three pigments here, raw sienna, burnt sienna and Payne’s grey.

The First Day

This came as a surprise as we rounded our driveway bend one evening. When the extraneous trees were eliminated, this was what was left, a serious view of creation, whether religious or astrophysical. This caused us to reread Genesis. The first and fourth days are confusingly similar so we asked a priest and two ministers for their opinions. The vote was unanimous. Yes, the first and fourth days sound similar if you’re not a scholar of the bible, but The First Day is a more impressive title!

The Frog Pond

If you look at my painting, Oxbow, you will see a strange similarity. I started this without any real plan (a real no-no). As it neared completion, I showed it to my husband, John, who said “Do you plan to title this Oxbow II?” This was not acceptable, so John suggested adding a couple of frogs in the foreground and this saved the subject from the trash bin. Anyway, we do have lots of frogs around here as anyone who is here on a summer night will tell you!

The Sentinels

Winter Wonderland

I’ve studied and painted our Blackwater River from a lot of vantages and in many of its personalities. Today I went all squinty and saw it only as form and color. It expressed my feeling about our valley, Canaan. Like Brigadoon, we appear out of the Highland mists only once every hundred years!
